Discover the Story Behind Marda Loop: Introducing A Loop in Time

If you’ve ever wandered down 33rd Avenue, grabbed a coffee at your favourite local café, or spent an afternoon exploring Marda Loop’s shops and parks, you’ve walked through a neighbourhood with a remarkable story.

The Marda Loop Business Improvement Area, in partnership with Heritage Calgary, is proud to launch A Loop in Time: a comprehensive historical context paper that explores how one of Calgary’s most vibrant neighbourhoods came to be. Researched and written by local historian Harry M. Sanders, this incredible resource traces the area’s evolution from Indigenous lands and early agricultural settlement to military history, neighbourhood development, local businesses, schools, parks, and the thriving community we know today.

More Than a Neighbourhood

While many Calgarians know Marda Loop for its independent businesses, restaurants, and walkable streets, few realize how many stories are woven into its past.

The history of Marda Loop stretches back long before Calgary became a city. The area sits on the traditional territories of the Treaty 7 Nations and has long been a place of gathering, travel, and community. Over the decades, it transformed from agricultural land into a growing suburb, welcomed military families from nearby Currie Barracks, and eventually became one of Calgary’s most beloved neighbourhood destinations.

Communities are built on stories.

Buildings change. Businesses evolve. Families come and go. But preserving the stories behind the places we love helps us better understand who we are and where we’re going.

A Loop in Time brings together years of research, archival photographs, historical maps, and community memories to document the people, places, and moments that shaped Marda Loop. It also serves as an invitation for future generations to appreciate and continue preserving the neighbourhood’s unique character.
